The BC-TTP was grateful to join the BC Bee Breeders Association on their Field Day! We discussed a variety of topics, including the start of a breeding program with the BC-TTP. Selective breeding can advance the prevalence of traits in honey bees that have economic importance including disease resistance, honey production, and low defensive behaviour.
We learned from other great speakers about pollinator gardens, how to build wax queen cups, how UBeeO™ is applied to assess hygienic behaviour targeted at controlling Varroa mites (Varroa destructor) (https://opterabees.com/), and we even found a drone congregation area (DCA)!

The BC-TTP had a field day with the Langley Bee Club!
Attendees were shown how to monitor mites using the alcohol wash and sugar shake methods – check out our reels to see tutorials on both of these methods. We also discussed the advantages of using sticky papers to monitor mite levels, and treating mites with an oxalic acid vaporizer as part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy.
The BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food recommends monitoring mites every 4 to 6 weeks from the start of the beekeeping season to the fall.
For more information, check out our reels for video tutorials on using the Alcohol Wash and Sugar Shake method to monitor mite levels. For a summary of registered products that can be used in Canada, check out this link: https://ttp-bchpa.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/BC-TTP-Summer-2022.pdf

The BC-TTP was excited to join a Field Day hosted by the Surrey Beekeepers Association. Attendees were taught how to monitor mites using the alcohol wash and sugar shake methods.
Monitoring mites is essential for an Integrated Pest Management Strategy (IPM). If you find ≥3% mites in your colonies, you need to take active steps in controlling your varroa mite levels. During nectar flow season, there is only one registered product in Canada that is permitted to treat mites: formic acid (Formic Pro and Mite Away Quick Strips – MAQS).
For more information on how to monitor your mite levels, take a look at our video tutorials in our reels section or check out this link: https://ttp-bchpa.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/BC-TTP-Summer-2022.pdf

The BC-TTP was grateful to hold a queen rearing workshop in collaboration with the Cowichan Beekeepers Club! We had a busy day practicing building a ‘starter colony’, marking bees, clipping wings, and grafting.
Queen rearing is the technique used to produce queen bees – an important step towards maintaining a sustainable beekeeping operation.

The North Okanagan Beekeepers hosted a Field Day in Kelowna, BC. The BC-TTP was so grateful for the opportunity to talk about our program, our current projects, and our plans for the upcoming season.
We demonstrated how to monitor varroa mite levels using both the sugar shake method and the alcohol wash method. For more information on how to use these methods to calculate your colony’s varroa mite levels

The Kamloops Beekeepers Club held a workshop and the BC-TTP was able to share with attendees about our program, our current projects, and invite beekeepers to participate with us in the upcoming season. This includes the sector analysis on the costs of pollination services (Fall 2023) and the Citizen Science Study which you can get more information on by clicking the link in our bio and selecting ‘Citizen Science Project’!
Big thanks to the Kamloops Beekeepers Club for hosting this workshop
